W.R.T. your comment on making choice to see all things in a positive light: Thank you Sheila, Iit is well said.
About 18 years ago, I was an investigative journalist with a rather high opinion of my own righteousness and intelligence. I used to write many expose’ s then. I thought, not entirely without justification, that I was doing society a huge favour.
One day, a couple of years down that road, my Dad, a senior journalist himself, wondered aloud whether I was not making it a habit to wallow in the gutters by seeking out what was wrong in society rather than what was wholesome and good.
I saw his point and stopped doing that sort of journalism.
I find there is a very thin and unclear line between wanting to right the wrongs of society, and succumbing to an inner urge to wallow in the wrongdoings of others.
This is just a passing thought, a memory triggered by your comment…

Thanks Sheila for writing that comment on FG’s post… actually the truth is that I love dogs … but once in the middle of the night I was aggressively surrounded by strays and they almost attacked me.
I have recounted that experience in one of my “stray thoughts” series and recommended that these strays should be eliminated.
FG did not agree with me.
That post was written at 2am bcus i was kept awake by their barking and howling… and I had an early morning important appointment the next day.
FG is of the view that its us humans who have to be removed from the face of the earth before we cause any more damage. Obviously I dont agree with him.

I absolutely agree with you about the cycles of lives and deaths.
Have you read a book called “many lives many masters”? Its about how a USA based top psychiatrist discovered the phenomenon of rebirth.
Most of us dont realise that name and fame is gained by ppl who have given away their belongings and gone on the path of self discovery. Buddha for instance. It is not money but knowledge that is supreme.
We remember Buddha, Mahavir, and many other saints but do we remember even a single rich man of the past - famous after death because he became RICH?
The pointlessness of ACCUMULATION is brought out very well when we watch animal planet where life is always on a short string.
What seperates us from animals is our EGO!!

Krishna has the courage to make such a promise for the reason that he lives without cause, he lives with abandon, he lives just for the joy of living. And anything can spring out of this causeless bliss. Only a free consciousness is capable of giving such an assurance. And when Krishna comes, he comes, not because of a particular situation, but because of his freedom; he is free to come and go as he likes. With Love…SV

Reading Krishna’s Gita a devotee extracts something of which he can make a belief, because Krishna spoke on bhakti, devotion. The karma yogi extracts his belief because Krishna has spoken on karma yoga, the Yoga of action. The believer in knowledge finds what he wants because Krishna has spoken on knowledge as well. Somewhere Krishna calls bhakti the ultimate, somewhere else he calls knowledge the ultimate, again elsewhere he calls karma yoga the ultimate.
Krishna’s statements are very political. He was a politician, a perfect politician. Just to say he was a politician is not right; he was a shrewd politician, a real diplomat. In his statements he considered and included many things. This is why the Gita suits everyone, why there are thousands of commentaries on the Gita.
Krishna is ready to lend a shoulder to anyone. Whosoever wants to steady themselves on his shoulder and shoot their bullets — Krishna is ready. The shoulder is his, you can take the opportunity to hide behind it.
,
shanmugam venkat says
Krishna’s Bhagavad Gita has been very influential. The first reason is that Krishna’s Gita is a synthesis. He is more concerned with synthesis than with truth. The desire for synthesis is so strong that if necessary Krishna doesn’t mind sacrificing the truth a little.
Krishna’s Gita is a hodgepodge containing everything; hence it suits everyone, because there is something in it for everyone. It is difficult to find any tradition whose voice is not found in the Gita. It is difficult to find anyone who does not take solace from the Gita. People love Krishna’s Gita because it is very easy to extract one’s own meaning from it. Krishna’s Gita is poetic.
