Hi friends!Personally, am not at all a net savvy.And feel its very important too ,to  live a relaxed life -both mental and physical….Yet, I would not ignore the fact that officially ,to people who are far away ,whom we don’t meet in daily ,weekly basis, it plays a major role…yet why not lets all balance the act and make best use of both the world!

Stop living a virtual life-the internet was created only to make our lives easier

I called someone up the other day. Someone I’ve spoken to by email countless times over the past two years, discussing work. Halfway through the conversation, it became obvious we had never actually spoken before.

There’s nothing shocking in that.But, surely, the fact that it isn’t shocking is something we should be shocked by? Ofcourse, the stock defence is efficiency. We are so busy that we don’t have time for idle chat. We live in accelerated times. But no one seems to have decided as what to do with all these extra speed in our lives, apart from emailing each other and sending amusing You Tube videos.

Ironically, this is something I’ve been reflecting on a fair bit recently. For a variety of reasons, I felt I need to slow down a little. And there doesn’t seem to be an application for that.

Mobile phones have also made us permanently contactable-mails mean the work week stretches into the evenings, the weekends and even holidays. Under the barrage of tweets, facebook invitations and instant messages, it has become almost impossible to switch off.

But the internet isn’t the problem: It’s the people on it. In other words me. I started spending so much of time on my laptop; hence, I decided to do something about it. And in true self –help style, my road to redemption began with a single step: I quit Twitter. And I just kept going. This need to wipe the slate clean, to de-clutter-or at least de-complicate –my life, took over. I needed a holiday from the world of stuff. So I decided on a very literal form of regressive therapy: was going to go offline, to see if I could last a week without looking at website or checking my e-mail: to somehow reconnect by disconnecting.

Difficult to say goodbye

My iphone was the next thing to go. If quitting Twitter and ditching the iphone was easy, facebook made all it as difficult as possible, tugging on all the virtual heartstrings they could dredge up from their data. Having selected “deactivate account “from my settings, I was faced with gallery of family and friends who I was told would miss me.

Next came the difficult bit: weaning myself off from the internet when I was at work. On the other day, I allowed myself to look at my inbox but not send any replies.I walked around office and talked to people .I rang people up. the first person I called rang off with the words:”Thank you so much for calling me.”See? Being offline was making a nicer person already.

But it’s alarmingly easy to disappear completely .Or, more to the point, to live like we all used to. I swapped Facebook updates for phone calls.Iread,I cooked, wrote a few postcards. Drew .I went on long walks. It was great. I could feel my head rising above the water again as the stream of information subsided.

So, entering the spirit of interaction, decided to call my bank to get some advice on saving accounts. The nice First Direct lady chatted away with me about savings accounts and I asked her if she could send me the details. “It’s all on the website, sir”.

After an affable lecture about how paperless banking helps the environment, she relented; But not without one parting shot: If you do decide go for an ISA, don’t forget you’ll have to set it up online.”

It’s impossible –and pointless-to live and work entirely offline in 2010.But,if I was hoping to achieve anything from what had now developed into two weeks offline, this was it: If you’re finding life on the information superhighway is getting too much, just pull over the hard shoulder and stretch your legs for a bit.

It doesn’t have to be for a fortnight but you can manage an hour. You need to reclaim the internet to remember it’s there to make your life easier, not to complicate it further.
