Easy way to write Hindi for Blogs http://blogs.rediff.com/shubhamlahoti/2006/04/19/easy-way-to-write-hindi-for-blogs/ http://blogs.rediff.com/shubhamlahoti/2006/04/19/easy-way-to-write-hindi-for-blogs/#comments Wed, 19 Apr 2006 09:16:14 +0000 shubham lahoti This is the method I used keeping the language in Settings as English (Somehow was not able to change it to Hindi)
I needed a phonetic unicode hindi writer which I finally got from here. ( http://www.iit.edu/~laksvij/language/hindi.html ) Now, just copy pasted the hindi unicode matter with a little manual change in code whenever ‘i’ i.e ि ( chhoti e ki matra) is used.

Hope it helps Hindi enthusiasts. (BTW.. other language convertor also available at the above site)

Reservations: Part I http://blogs.rediff.com/shubhamlahoti/2006/04/08/reservations-part-i/ http://blogs.rediff.com/shubhamlahoti/2006/04/08/reservations-part-i/#comments Sat, 08 Apr 2006 12:43:11 +0000 shubham lahoti Again the demon of reservation is out of the box and the great “politicians” of this great “democracy” are playing with it to gain some votes & keep their seats intact. One always wonder why the real issues take a back seat in indian politics and some creepy issues like castes, religion etc. become the most important. Accepted that in most of the countries in the world religion becomes an important part of politics but in a country like india even after thousand years of foreign rule if things like minority appeasement, ‘pseudo’ foreign rule, etc. happens, one ought to worry where the nation is heading to. Well, well… I shall just stick to the current topic viz. reservation and leave the religionism, for the time being, out of this discussion.

Cut to era of 50s, the great Dr. Ambedkar - the great architect of the ‘great’ indian constitution decides to uplift the backward classes by providing them reservations i.e. though they need not be suitable for the job or a position but they will get it. It could have been proved as a good step after what these poor guys have been facing since a millennium or so. But what actually followed, thanks to shrewd politicians of india, was creation of a vote bank and slow but steady widening of the gap between the so called upper and lower caste. The rich of the lower caste made use of the reservations and those from not so well-to-do families were left in their previous conditions. By the way, who don’t know, there are poor people in upper caste also who have no one to care about them neither reservations nor any other source because they belong to upper caste.

Cut to 1989, Mr. V. P. Singh is the PM, Mandal commission sets up and proposes 50% reservation. Wide spread violent protest and thanks to few incidents of suicides, decision is taken back.

Come 2006 and another Singh does Mandal 2 - let us kill the golden goose for some votes. The students are pre occupied with their problems, so why not just do something which is totally senseless. The whole story is in front of every one and I see no point in repeating it. Let us talk about what will be the effect of the this reservation, if implemented as proposed.

Sports in India http://blogs.rediff.com/shubhamlahoti/2006/02/21/sports-in-india/ http://blogs.rediff.com/shubhamlahoti/2006/02/21/sports-in-india/#comments Mon, 20 Feb 2006 21:31:28 +0000 shubham lahoti I always wonder are there any othere sports that exist in India besides Cricket and Sania Mirza’s Tennis. Loses or wins in these cricket, the way team is selected, its administration, the t-shirt the grl wears, the the style of ring she wears, any thing like that becomes a frnt page story. But talk of any other game, it seems none in the country knows a bit about them. The way hockey is run seems the main reason for its downfall. Mr. Gill forgets that he is not tackling terrorists in Punjab. His authotarian ways according to me is the only reaosn for the downfall of our “National” game. God knows the future of hockey if he sticks to his ways and Indian media acts as dumb as it has been acting, since it was conceived

Clash of the Civilizations ???? http://blogs.rediff.com/shubhamlahoti/2006/02/18/clash-of-the-civilizations/ http://blogs.rediff.com/shubhamlahoti/2006/02/18/clash-of-the-civilizations/#comments Fri, 17 Feb 2006 22:37:46 +0000 shubham lahoti With the cartoon controversy spreading its wing through out the globe, it is all set for an addition of a new chapter, after Cold War, into the book of human existence. The Western World is not tolerant enough to respect the religious sentiments of the people in the East and in its quest for so called ‘freedom’ it has fuelled the existing fire between the “Christian” and the “Islamic” world. The hapless West, after the terror attack of 9/11, has found an interesting way to vent out its frustration: Afghanistan, Iraq and now this unnecessary Cartoon. No matter how wrong they may be, but with the poor Third World nations virtually dependent on them in all spheres they have got the courage to go ahead and bully anyone, anywhere.

to be completed later :)
