Coen goo g'joob

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete, the grizzled old liftman: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. *pause* Anyway, I’ve heard about it.

Barton Fink
is a masterpiece, a tale of a playwright reluctantly trying to make it as a screenwriter in Hollywood. John Turturro is fabulous in the lead, and the rest of the cast — John Goodman, John Mahoney, Steve Buscemi, Tony Shalhoub — is magnificent. The film won the Palme D’or at Cannes in 1991, plus Best Director and Actor.

The Brothers Coen are remarkable filmmakers, constantly pushing themselves and always experimental. From Raising Arizona to The Big Lebowski, director Joel and producer Ethan (co-writers both) have marvellously experimented with every cinematic genre, often repeating a handful of actors — Frances McDormand (Joel’s ultratalented wife), Turturro, Buscemi, Goodman, Thornton – with tremendous results. Their style is perpetually dark, wildly funny, and brilliantly scripted.

Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossin, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers.

They’re all fine films, but which is your favourite, and why?

The Dude: It’s like what Lenin said.. you look for the person who will benefit, and, uh, uh..
Donny: I am the walrus.
The Dude: You know what I’m trying to say…
Donny: I am the walrus.
Walter Sobchak: Shut the **** up, Donny! V I Lenin. Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov!

My vote goes to The Big Lebowski, dudes.

  2. Sam says

Ladykillers is the worst, by far.

  3. fan of the Dude says

“New shit has come to light man…you know…”
Big Lebowski is my favourite and thats the only DVD I own :-)

  4. nisha says

definetly Fargo, Francis Mcdormett is fabulous

  5. shomer shabbas says

    Shut the fuck up, Donny!
Where as what we have here, a bunch of fig-eaters, wearing towels on their
heads tryin’ to find reverse on a Soviet tank. This, this is not a worthy
    fucking adversary. :D

  6. Occasional Crtitic says

Although Miller’s Crossing is their best Work, I would have to with Fargo.

  7. Mahesh Patwardhan says

It is The Big Lebowski …. which is probably one of the funniest movies I
have ever seen. Followed by Fargo, Miller’s Crossing - the soft focus
cinematography is amazing, Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasnt
    there…etc.etc….. they are all good…..

I think Fargo is still the best. The whole story the backdrop of small town and
snow. And a simple script executed so well. Moreover it is based on a true story
and I like true stories where the moral always is “crime never pays” ..:)

  9. vamsee prasad says

Fargo is a masterpiece, what really adds to the films tension is the fact
that, at the opening credits, they mention that it was a true story.
Blood Simple is an amazing film too.
The Big Lebowski, Millers Crossing,Raising Arizona are my other favorites.
Coens, one of the best Indie movies creators.

  10. ChotaMota Oppinionwaala says

DONNY: His name is Lebowski? That’s your name, Dude!
DUDE: Yeah, this is the guy, this guy should compensate me for the
fucking rug. I mean his wife goes out and owes money and they pee on
    my rug.

WALTER: Thaaat’s right Dude; they pee on your fucking Rug.

This about sums it up for me…But then does it really? The simplicity of
the plot, attention to detail, the pace of the movie, hillarious dialogues,
the trippy picturization of ” Just Dropped In –To See What Condition My
Condition Was In ” and John Turturro’s role as Jesus

I enjoyed this movie better than Fargo.

it has to be the Dude! or “Dude-raham” or “El-Dudino” or whatever you
choose to refer to him as :) “Fargo” is sweet in it’s own way but
    Lebowski is an indulgence ;)

Miller’s Crossing, to me, is their best film. Very good plot, amazing
screenplay and extracted fine performances. Brilliant dialogues to top it all!

my fav coen bro movie is “O Brother, where art thou”. I just loves the
genious story telling in the musical. The language is just great and the
vocabulary is beautiful and poetic. I also like ‘Lady Killers’, just for the
diction of the dialogues. Fargo and Blood Simple are great because of
the twists and turns, but i prefer the coen bro’s movies for their
    narration, dialogue and story telling.
