Eleven mentors found for victims of Coop Hsg Soc managing committees

Report of RTI Union’s meeting on Cooperative Housing Societies (CHS) on June 4 at Dadar Parsi Colony, Mumbai

Dear friends,

Over 50 persons attended the meeting on June 4 held at the residence of Homi Lord. This meeting focused on victims of the bullying tactics and corruption of their managing committees. Although the discretionary powers of CHS managing committees are tiny, such powers are widely abused to harass individual flat owners for petty gains. The Jan Lokpal Bill cannot curb such corruption, which is giving sleepless nights to tens of thousands in Mumbai Metropolitan Region alone. Grassroot level work is needed to solve this problem.

Contact details of 42 participants:

We are enabling people to defend themselves through the strategic use of Right to Information (RTI) Act, Maharashtra Cooperative Societies (MCS) Act, Consumer Protection Act (CPA), Indian Penal Code (IPC), complaints to Municipal authorities etc.

At the meeting, troubled citizens shared their stories. Those who had gained knowledge of various legal procedures from their battles offered practical assistance and advice to others. They gave their email addresses and mobile numbers, and offered to help others free-of-charge.

Best Wishes,
