A FEW GOOD MEN

What is it with men, mobs and molestation in our country? The recent Mumbai incident has not only exposed the moral depravity but also the desperation and cowardly nature of men in our urban, super fast metros. I don't wish to generalize as there are decent men around also. Men like the guy in the red t-shirt who, by the victims own admission jumped into the mob to help them.

I wonder what sets men apart. It can't be only education, class, strata and all that blah- blah. Heroes and zeroes exist everywhere. What is the inherent characteristic that makes a hero rise up to the situation? What is it that makes a hero think that it is perfectly sane to do something in a particular situation, which a normal person would think foolish to even try? What kind of a social conditioning is required to make sure we have more heroes among us than cowards who think they can take advantage of being anonymous in a crowd and let go of whatever restricts them when they don't have the "courage" of numbers. What would it take to have a mob which surges forward to protect the dignity of a woman than to claw and molest her? What would it take to make sure a woman can wear what she wants, walk freely without fear lurking in her mind of a possible lewd remark, molestation or rape? Wonder what it would take to have a world where we stop living in denial about crime and violence against women across social strata and classes. What would it take for the coward in the mob or the roadside romeo to realize that there is more to life than creating fear in a woman's mind, there are better ways to channelise your sexual frustration/ fantasies than by pouncing on a hapless woman who for all you know could be your own sister, wife, mother, cousin tomorrow. What would it take to breed a few good men not necessarily heroes but decent, kind and humane men who would live and let live.

Hi, I hope someone would be able to provide all the answers some day. We have very similar problems here. What we use is a combined approach. Education, public awareness and enforcing legislation with great determination. There is another problem associated with this: that is it is quite pointless if such a criminal is arrested and is subject to a minor sentence. The main problem in SA is that the death penalty has been abolished. many so called reformists claim that the death penalty is no deterrent to crime and criminals. Frankly our system is not working because criminals know they can disrespect and kill and they wont be killed. I am a believer in the death penalty. I firmly believe that for some crimes and those include rape and murder the only solution is the death penalty.

Too many factors come to play in this - and meena and rajesh have in essence summed up what the causes - however, the irony in this is that there are well educated people too who get into this mob mentality and have no qualms of attacking or molesting. But if at least people do a little bit of what Meena and Rajesh have said it will go a long way to create an awareness and then maybe like Ash wished and like everyone of us hopes a day will come when a woman can walk the streets even at odd hours without Fear. Very well written WS. :)))))))))))))))))))))

Awesome one WS. I wonder when the day would come when women would not be subject to cat calls and eve teasing, the day when she can safely hold her head in the still air and walk without being scared of the aftermath of any mishap. This incident blew me off too. Thanks for penning this one down.

education is only a part, but how we, parents teach our kids plays a major role ….. and nowdays mass media is playing a big role in destroying young hearts…they make them belive all nonsense..and parents dont have any clue abt anyhting… they r in the running to stablise their status in the society..they dont have the quality time to spend with their kids, and i am talking abt some parents nt all..no offence

lovely blog and an apt title… too many questions and too few answers… i guess a bit of everything.. starting from education, family bonding, a harmonious society, sensible and self-restraining media, sensible and meaningful cinema and tv… all will go a long way in creating a positive frame of mind in a person… education alone will not do much..
