Greetings from Webinmail!

Thought I will pen (or rather punch) a few words as the product is going to see the light of the day. I think this is the best time to tell you a little story about how it all started.

Sitting in my chair, sipping the hot tea, I was having a casual discussion with my colleagues. Like a river stream, the context of the discussion started flowing from one to another. And it came to the advantages and disadvantages of having a full internet access in the office. As I have also witnessed many such wars such as Vi against EMacs - Linux editors and Eclipse against NetBeans IDE users, this conversation was brewing well. So, we started discussing the case of person ‘Joe’ who sits in the IT park working on the Java project not having access to search, browse and information newsgroups.

*Lights* flickered in the mind on this very case while I kept wondering how to give this Joe what he wants and bring a smile on his face. This very moment when Webinmail took birth.

I spent a couple of hours in the night quickly writing the primary flow of the product and gave it to the ever enthusiastic team for chalking out a plan to turn this in the reality. As the product started taking shape, creative juices started flowing from all directions to make it a user friendly experience. The developer lead gave the vital idea of replacing A HREF links with mailto: links to easy mail-browsing. And thus, the product in its first shape is ready and we all @ rediff are very pleased to present it to you which is turned around in less than a month of ideation.

All I can say at this point is “World is full of good things and problems. And its these problems which pushes leaders to think on ways solve it.”

I am pretty sure this will reach the users - on the move with mobile, in the IT park with no web access to do the browsing and stay in touch with the cloud at a press of a button”

Just try sending a blank mail to browse@webinmail.com !!

Happy mail-browsing.

Sumit

Browse web pages in your mail http://blogs.rediff.com/webinmail/2008/11/24/browse-web-pages-in-your-mail/ http://blogs.rediff.com/webinmail/2008/11/24/browse-web-pages-in-your-mail/#comments Mon, 24 Nov 2008 07:01:06 +0000

Hi, let us go through our product webinmail.

With webinmail, you can now browse the internet without a browser. So, instead of a browser open an email client, like MS Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird and so on.

Now, open the compose mail window.
In the ‘To’ address type browse@webinmail.com and type the command in the subject line.

Let us consider a case where you want to go to a URL or a website you know.

To go to a website you know -
Send the URL of the website (e.g. http://www.rediff.com) in the subject to browse@webinmail.com

In few seconds you will receive a reply from webinmail.
That reply will contain the HTML page of the site you wanted to browse.

Now that you’ve got a fair understanding of how to use webinmail, let us see how you can
search using webinmail.

To search -
Send your search query (e.g. perl books) in the subject to browse@webinmail.com

And in no time you will receive the results page in reply.
Click on the result of choice, and you’ll see that the compose window opens with the subject line filled.
All you need to do is send the mail and you’ll get the web page in reply.

Similarly if you want to search on google -
Send your search query as google:query (e.g. google: perl books) in the subject to browse@webinmail.com and you will get the results.

Isn't it simple? Well if you are still not sure click on the ‘How it works’ section to try it or send us a ‘help’ command :)

Hope you find it useful and we look forward to your feedback.
