Indian States etymology…..

1. Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Sanskrit Hanumant, name of the advisor to the king of the monkeys in the Ramayana. Nicobar means “land of the naked”.

2. Andhra Pradesh: Hindi Andhra, from Telugu Andhramu: Telugu, and Pradesh: state.

3. Arunachal Pradesh: Aruna: dawn-lit, Achal: mountains, Pradesh: land

4. Assam: probably from the Ahamiya clan (or Ahoms), who invaded in the 13th century; or Sanskrit asoma: peerless.

5. Bihar: Sanskrit vihara: monastery. Old capital had a major Buddhist monastery.

6. Chandigarh: sited where a temple of the goddess Chandi (the Hindu goddess Durga) stands near a garh (fort).

7. Chhattisgarh: Chhattis: thirty-six + garh: forts, for 36 forts located in the state

8. Delhi: shortened from Dhillika, a name originally applied to the region circa A.D. 750, from a temple to the goddess Dhillika.

9. Goa: shortened from Gomantaka. Goa is said to have been derived from the Konkani word ‘Goyan’, which means a patch of tall grass.

10. Gujarat: Sanskrit Gurjara, ethnic name The Gurjars were a Kshatriya tribe.

11. Haryana: Hari (a Hindu god) + Hindi ayana: home

12. Himachal Pradesh: Sanskrit hima: snow, achal: mountains (the Himalayas), Hindi pradesh: land

13. Jharkhand: Forest country.

14. Karnataka: Kannada for “lofty land”. From Karu + Naad = Karnaad, which means “lofty + land”.

15. Kashmir: from Sanskrit kasyapamara: land of Kasyapa (Hindu god) From Sanskrit Ka(water) and shimeera(to desiccate).

16. Kerala : kera (’coconut palm tree’) and alam (’land’ or ‘abode of’). or from the phrase Chera alam (Land of the Chera).

17. Lakshadweep: Sanskrit Laksha: one hundred thousand, Dvipa: islands

18. Madhya Pradesh: Hindi for central state

19. Maharashtra: Sanskrit for great kingdom (akin to maharaja); or, land of the Mahars and Rattas; or, corruption of maha kantara: great forest; or, maha rathi: great charioteers.

20. Manipur: “Jeweled land”

21. Meghalaya: Megha: cloud, alaya: home, i.e. home of the clouds

22. Mizoram: the land of Mizos (highlanders) Mi means people and zo means highlander.

23. Nagaland : Land of the Nagas.

24. Orissa: Sanskrit Odrah: ethnic name, deshah: state Odra or Udra tribes that inhabited the central belt of modern Orissa.

25. Pondicherry: Tamil Pudu: new, Cheri: town

26. Punjab: Persian Panj: five, ab: river (the area is drained by five tributaries of the Indus)

27. Rajasthan: Hindi Raja: king, Sthan: land (formed by the union of 19 small kingdoms)

28. Sikkim : Sikkim is that it is a combination of two words in the Limbu Su, which means “new”, and Khyim, which means “palace” or houseThe Tibetan name for Sikkim is Denjong, which means the “valley of rice”.

29. Tamil Nadu: Tamil Country. Nadu means country or homeland.

30. Tripura: possibly from Tuipra: land adjoining the water.

31. Uttranchal : Uttara means North and Anchal means area or Border. Northeren Border

32. Uttar Pradesh: Sanskrit Uttarah: upper or northern, Pradeshah: state

33. West Bengal: Western part of Bengal, from Bengali bangla: ethnic name.
